Developing greater awareness is the object of practicing I Liq Chuan. In I Liq Chuan, mindfulness practice is just as important as physical training. I Liq Chuan Freemantle focuses on individual awareness training incorporating I Liq Chuan principles in the form of standing and moving meditation rather than active partner training which we practice at I Liq Chuan Canningvale. I Liq Chuan is based on Zen philosophy and Tai Chi. Training the mind to be fully present is essential to the learning process and to applying the art. In order to harmonize and flow with, or without an opponent, the mind must be fully present to perceive the conditions of the moment as they are. Without seeing the conditions of the moment, your actions are based on anticipation and will be reactive or reflexive. During the I Liq Chuan training process, mindfulness practice is required to see 'things as they are'. I Liq Chuan mindfulness training helps to focus the attention and improve mental clarity, I Liq Chuan physical training helps to integrate and relax the body. There are no long lists of techniques to accumulate in I Liq Chuan. There are 15 basic exercises that are used to demonstrate specific movements in a variety of situations and applications, two Tai Chi like forms (the 21 Form and the Butterfly form), and a wide range of partner training progressions primarily based on a skill set called Spinning Hands. These exercises, in and of themselves, do not define the art. What defines correct I Liq Chuan practice is not the choreography of the movements, but rather if the movements conform to a set of clearly defined principles based on a natural body alignment, structure and mental awareness.
